NOTES AND TECHNIQUES

Knitted from the bottom with provisional cast-on, the chevron lace and Stockinette stitch patterns are worked in the round to the underarm. Front and back are worked flat separately before being joined at the shoulders with Russian grafting. Simple garter stitch edgings complete the armholes and neck opening. Stitches are picked up from the provisional cast-on to work the hem in short row shaping that accentuates the zig-zag shape of the chevron lace pattern.

INSPIRATION

Lapis in Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu (in Indonesian and Malay), means layers. While lapis in Latin means stone, associated with the beautiful blue lapis lazuli stone, in the region around Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, it is commonly associated with soft and sweet confectionery made in layers.

Kek Lapis is a traditional spiced layer cake. Each layer of cake batter is measured and baked under precise timing until all the batter is used up. It is a rather expensive treat, eaten only during special occasions. Kueh Lapis is a wobbly steamed sticky rice cake with a distinctive coconut milk flavour. It usually consists of two alternating coloured layers, but variations layered with colours of the rainbow are common too.

The word kueh refers to sweet or savoury traditional snacks, eaten throughout the day. Ang Ku Kueh, the name of the boldly variegated colourway used in the chevron lace pattern in this design, is a type of small oval shaped snack with soft sticky glutinous rice flour skin wrapped around a sweet or savoury filling in the centre. It is moulded to resemble a tortoise shell and is steamed on a square piece of banana leaf. The red colour in the colourway resembles the traditional colour of the glutinous rice flour skin. Yellow resembles the colour of the filling, while green represents the banana leaf.

After making swatches with this striking colourway hand-dyed in Singapore by ParkourKitties Fibers, I found out that it stripes beautifully in layers and is best expressed in zig-zag lines of chevron patterns. Paired with a deep grey contrasting colour, the colours of the Ang Ku Kueh colourway become more vivid, like the bright colours of Kueh Lapis.

Working with a colourway that evokes childhood memories of peeling and eating Kueh Lapis layer by layer, I decided to ride the wave of nostalgia and shape the pullover in a retro-style silhouette with a fitted, cropped waist and generous ease at the top.
