For a number of reasons over the past years I have often had periods of wakefulness during the night – one pleasant thing I sometimes find my mind pondering over during these times is future knitting designs! This wrap design idea was sparked during a period of sleepless nights – hence the name!

This wrap is worked from the middle outwards, starting with a centre-out diamond worked on dpns in the round, then moving to a circular needle as the stitches increase. Each end of the wrap is then worked in turn, knitting rows back and forth, alternating garter stitch and stocking stitch/eyelet sections, to create a striking chevron pattern. It is finished with optional tassels.

This is an ideal project for mini skeins - I used 6 x 20g mini skeins alongside a 100g skein of yarn, but you could also use 12 x 10g mini skeins or remnants of yarn from your stash.

Skills required: casting on, knitting in the round (starting with a very small circumference) on both DPNs and a circular needle, knit and purl stitches, kfb increases, yarn over, ssk and k2tog decreases, casting off.

SIZING: One size – after blocking measures 12“/30cm x 74“/188cm excluding tassels

TENSION/GAUGE: 4”/10cm = 24 stitches and 40 rows over stocking stitch on 3.25mm needles

YARN: For the main colour you will need approximately 400m/438yds of fingering weight/4ply yarn.
For the six contrast colours you will need approximately 80m/87yds of fingering weight/4ply yarn in each colour (I used 6 x 20g mini skeins). Alternatively, if you do not want both ends of your wrap to be identical, you could you 12 x 10g mini skeins, or use up leftover yarn from your stash instead.

NEEDLES AND NOTIONS:

• 3.25mm set of five DPNs and a circular needle (or size to give correct tension) - I used 8”/20cm dpns, and would suggest a 24”/60cm circular needle to use alongside them. (A longer circular needle would be needed if you use the magic loop or traveling loop technique).

• 4 Stitch markers

• Spare yarn or spare circular needle for holding stitches

• Needle (for weaving in ends)
