The Summer Sidewalk blanket is a very easy knitting pattern that may be used with DK or worsted weight yarn.

Summer Sidewalk is inspired by memories of summer days with friends and family: riding bikes together, getting ice cream cones, making sidewalk chalk drawings, playing hopscotch and jumping rope, and admiring summer flowers by the sidewalk.

Summer Sidewalk blanket is a lightweight version of one of my favorite chunky blanket designs…Where the Sidewalk Ends.

DIRECTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…

Baby Blanket: 27” wide x 27” long
Small Blanket: 29” wide x 31” long
Medium Blanket: 31” wide x 35” long
Large Throw: 35” wide x 41” long
XL Afghan: 41” wide x 49” long
XXL Afghan: 46” wide x 53” long

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.

DK #3 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 600 - 625 yards
Small: 750 - 780 yards
Medium: 900 - 950 yards
Large: 1200 - 1275 yards
XL: 1650 - 1750 yards
XXL: 2000 - 2100 yards

Adapt for #4 weight worsted yarn: Use the directions for one size smaller than desired finished size. A different weight yarn may require more (or less) yarn than noted.

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.

This pattern will work well with many DK or worsted weight yarns. This pattern looks attractive with a solid color or gently variegated yarn.

GAUGE:

Garter stitch with US size 7 needles: approximately 18 stitches & 28 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential.

I used US size 7 knitting needles…but choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension.

Significantly different gauge may require more yarn.

CIRCULAR KNITTING NEEDLES:

In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are recommended.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy/Beginner

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of finished knitting is recommended.

This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.

Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles.

Written pattern with row by row instructions.
