Introducing the Three Season Cardigan: elevate your wardrobe by transforming the timeless cable-knit sweater into a chic statement piece for spring, summer, and fall. Featuring varied textures, airy worsted lace, intricate braided cables, and a fresh, customizable semi-cropped silhouette, this cardigan is perfect for layering over your favorite dresses and high-waisted jeans. Add a versatile, slow-fashion touch to your wardrobe!

The Three Season Cardigan is ideal for intermediate garment knitters. Though the textured stitches, lace, and cables are relatively straightforward, this pattern requires chart-reading skills, as written instructions will not be provided.

However, comprehensive written directions, schematics, and video tutorials ensure a smooth construction process. In-depth tutorials cover special techniques featured in the Three Season Cardigan, such as provisional cast-on, joining shoulders, and adding buttonholes.

Construction Overview: The cardigan’s body is worked flat, with sleeves knit in the round. Back shoulder pieces are knit separately and joined across the back of the neck which includes both neckline and shoulder shaping for a super comfy fit. The back panel, including an armscye for sizes 4-10, is knit following a chart and concludes with a ribbed 2x2 hem.

Front panels are picked up from the shoulder stitches and knit flat, following charts that create a beautiful V-neck (with an armscye for sizes 5-10). The front panels also conclude with a ribbed 2x2 hem. The sides are seamed using the mattress stitch, forming armholes.

Starting at the right bottom hem, pick up and knit the button band and collar, incorporating buttonholes as shown in the tutorial. Following the collar, pick up and knit stitches for the sleeves (worked in the round). Finish the sleeves with cozy 1x1 ribbing, as indicated by the chart.

Needle Size: US8 (or to meet gauge) along with one size smaller (for ribbing) and one size larger (for sleeves) than needle used to meet gauge for main sweater body.

Gauge: See pattern for complete gauge information & a special chart for swatching

Sizing: Visit woolandpine.com to watch a video on customizing your cardigan and choosing the right size along with a schematic with complete sizing info.

Choose a size with 5-9” positive ease measured at your full bust compared to measurement A) Width when buttoned.

As a Vneck cardigan this sweater will fit nicely across your bust with more ease through the body. If you choose a size smaller than the recommended ease you may have issues with the fit of your armholes, shoulders and sleeves.

A) Width when buttoned: 40 (43.5, 46.5, 49, 53.5)(58, 62, 65, 70, 75)“ 103 (110, 118, 125, 136)(147, 157, 165, 178, 190) cm

Yarn: Worsted

We recommend a tonal solid in a blend of worsted cotton and wool blend for a garment that is warm yet lighter on the body compared to a 100% Worsted weight wool, note the weight of the recommended yarns below along with the extended description of said yarn to inform your yarn purchase. Furthermore, check out our tester’s project pages for more yarn recommendations in various fibers. 100% Merino Worsted is also very lovely here!

Cascade Cantata 70% Cotton / 30% Merino Wool · Weight: 100 g (3.5 oz) · Approx: 218 yds (200 m)

Cascade Yarns Cantata has an interesting construction of a cotton tube with superwash Merino wool fibers blown inside. The tube construction makes the yarn airy and lofty, and the fiber content works great for transitional sweaters. Textured stitches and cables will pop with Cantata.

Concept Cotton - Merino by Katia 70% Cotton/ 30% Wool 50g/115yds

Katia Cotton-Merino has a fiber-filled net construction which gives it a rounded strand and unique visual texture that carries over beautifully into the finished fabric. Cotton-Merino is a light, downy, worsted weight yarn in a blend of cotton and Merino wool that lends a lovely halo and gentle softness to your finished cardigan.

If looking for an alternative to these two options with a similar look, try searching for a “blow yarn” which has the same fiber blown tube construction as to the yarns mentioned above but with different fibers. Two such examples are Drops Air or Hobbii Divina.

Handdyed worsted 100% wool also looks very lovely, see our tester’s pages for more options!

Yardage: Yardages listed include swatching and are for a cropped body. If you are planning to extend the body we recommend purchasing extra yarn.

790 (900,960, 1020, 1120)(1240, 1360, 1460, 1580, 1720) yards

722 (825, 880, 935, 1024)(1134, 1244, 1335, 1445, 1573) meters

Buttons: We recommend x4 1” buttons, however, the buttonhole technique included with the pattern allows for easy adaptation to any size button you wish!
