Notes

Reminder that I need to:

  • weigh finished scarf to see how much of the skein is left over
  • see if I wrote down hook size change. It started out too loose so I had to rip out and redo. I either went from a K to J or a J to I hook. For the regular crochet fringe I know I used a J.

Several experiments with this scarf! Not normal chain stitch fringe; these are “bugle cords” (a kind of doubled chain). So are the raindrop ends. Super happy with the structure of these chains. Regular chains were too stringy and flimsy and common looking for this yarn. Can’t tell in photos though-?

The fringe is also the return passes of the main Tunisian-crocheted scarf. The forward pass is extended TSS, gently color-pooled (I stacked the colors but didn’t enforce strict color columns).

Every other forward pass is inverse extended TSS, due to to the fact that I only fastened off the return passes. This is one reason I only loosely stacked the colors.

The results are unexpected in several ways!

  1. My original inspiration was a skinny white scarf I saw in Elle magazine, May 2018 issue, by Camilla & Marc. (I can’t find a trace of it online) but they didn’t end up similar.
  2. With the pooling I was going with a moiré effect. The yarn is so so glossy, languid, rich, and subtly shaded, like antique opal. It’s hard to get photos to do it justice. Too subtle maybe, or half the experience is how it feels. 2.5 I was sure the main cool effect was going to be the chains and raindrops being pooled colors. All drops being lavender, for example. In reality it had no effect at all. They didn’t even seem nice all the same length so I staggered them and do like them that way. Still wonder what it would be like to have them pooled to be color-coordinated. Even in a progression of color “drops”, you know?
  3. The chain fringe is more substantial than I imagined. I think I’d prefer a different proportion (fewer rows, more space between chains, thinner yarn maybe). I first swatched a light fingering weight merino and it was NOT right for this. THe silk is a-MAZEing.
  4. It was surprisingly difficult to keep the transition from return pass into chains and vice verssa from being messy looking!
